80s Costumes and Fashion for Elderly Women
The fashion trend in the 80s costumes for women reflected the hip-hop American subcultures and rebellious punk rock. In essence, clothing items such as miniskirts, colored hose, leg warmers, top crops and off-the-shoulder shirts graced runways. It’s not surprising that 80s costumes and fashion are returning.
For women who didn’t want to reveal imperfections, the absence of conservatism in the fashion of this era did not meet their needs. But, modifications here and there provided tons of options to meet everyone’s fashion need. Today’s 80’s costumes and fashion are available in diverse options for elderly women.
Trendy Loose Jackets
In the 80s, trendy older women were found putting on fitted, straight pants matched with contrasting loose or baggy jackets. As a result of such outlandish styles, suiting was easily worn in both soft and multi-colored manner to optimize matured femininity.  The lengths of the jackets were longer.
Also, some adult ladies integrated asymmetrical stitching, plus a longer back than the front of the jacket. Other options of this 80s dress for adult women included pointed tails integrated to the fronts of the jackets and suitable with vests worn underneath. One of the popular features of jackets in that era was gender-bending shoulder pads, office-styled sleeves pinned at the elbows and assertive pointed collars.
Shoulder Padded Clothes
Adding shoulder pads to clothing, especially dresses and long/short-sleeved jackets was trendy back in the days. And, particularly for elderly women, it helped provide rounded and somewhat raised shoulders. Integrating shoulder pads to today’s fashion for elderly women is certainly not out of point.
Shows such as “Miami Vice” and “Dynasty” influenced a fashion trend in the 80s that popularized shoulder padded clothing. Of course, the female characters in “The Golden Girls” were all seen with shoulder-padded clothes. This trend still goes well for elderly women.
Typically, shoulder pad addition back in the days was sewn onto jumpsuits, straight sheath dresses, knit blouses, jackets, as well as cashmere sweaters. The origin of the shoulder-pad look is traced back to the football players, but has been de-highlighted with the addition of bow ties, satin materials, embroidery, large buttons, lace embellishments and appliques.
Jump Suits
Some of the elderly women of the 80s were chic and not-so conservative in their dressing. This category of elderly women wore form-fitting jumpsuits designed in different styles to highlight their figures.
Such jumpsuits featured tapered ankles and legs, wide belts, and forgiving elastic waistline for definition. They were probably influenced by Rue McClanahan’s character who regularly wore jumpsuits in “The Golden Girls”. Some of the jumpsuits integrated cowl necks to accentuate the bustline.
When it comes to accessories, 80’s costumes featured loud and large accessories. They weren’t just large but also long and dangling (the earrings in particular). Hairs were styled short and blouses were worn with long necklaces.
The modern form of the 80s fashions for elderly women are here again. And, it’s really cool.
